The single-point mooring system is technically challenging and expensive to build. At present, companies that have the state of the art single-point mooring system technology are SBM, Bluewater in the Netherlands, SOFEC in the United States, and NOV (formally APL) in Norway and the United States.

In the early 1980s, SBM first proposed the concept of a turret based on the principle of "wind-mark effect." In 1985, an external turret was installed in the stern of a 140,000-ton floating storage tanker, applying this concept to reality (Yifeng 2012; Liu and He 2006).. The turret mooring works in the same way as other single point mooring methods.
