The Kalambaina Formation study area covers about 3,200 km 2 of the low-lying sloping Sokoto sedimentary basin, northwestern Nigeria (Fig. 1).The study area extends from south of Sokoto City and widens northeastwards to Illela at the Nigeria–Niger Republic border around where it attains a maximum relief of about 396 m above mean sea level.
